Hot Sugar (Nick Koenig) documentary, HOT SUGAR’S COLD WORLD, explores the musical universe of “the modern-day Mozart” as he explores artistry, creativity, & his past and features appearances by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jim Jarmusch & Heems (formerly of Das Racist). We sit down with director Adam Bhala Lough and discuss the making of the film, Hot Sugar’s “associative music,” and look at clips from the film just after it’s 2015 SXSW premiere, on BYOD hosted by Ondi Timoner.

From internationally acclaimed filmmaker Adam Bhala Lough, and Executive Producers David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Jody Hill, Hot Sugar’s Cold World is fly-on-the-wall look into the life of a modern-day Mozart, Nick Koenig (Hot Sugar) as he creates one-of-a-kind music made entirely out of sounds from the world around him. Nick lives every young musician’s dream, but when his internet- famous girlfriend, (rapper Kitty) goes on tour and they split, he flies to Paris where he grew up, to move on with his life, while hunting for increasingly unique and exotic sounds to sample and turn into beats. Through his journey, Hot Sugar goes on some crazy adventures, meets some fascinating people and learns what it takes to survive as an artist. With appearances by former members of Das Racist, legendary filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Only Lovers Left Alive), the world’s most renowned Astrophysicst, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson (Cosmos on FOX) and comedian Martin Starr (HBO’s Silicon Valley) among a host of other musicians and personalities. Moving comfortably between Narrative and Documentary, Adam's films sit at the nexus of mainstream culture and the arthouse. He specializes in crafting real performances out of non-performers, artists, musicians, professional athletes and celebrities, while bringing Academy Award winning actors to the table as well. His 5 features have entered the most prestigious international film festivals - Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Edinburgh, Karlovy Vary, Stockholm, Melbourne, Cairo - to name a few. Adam is also a mentor in the Sundance Institute's Native Film lab and was given the Congressional Award for voluntary public service.
